Bikes change hands quickly in Punjab, and a quick verification before you buy can save you from a stolen, non-transferable or tax-defaulter motorcycle. Here is how to check a bike properly.

Check on the official MTMIS portal

Open the official MTMIS Punjab portal at https://mtmis.excise.punjab.gov.pk and enter the bike’s registration number. The record shows the registered owner, make and model, registration date, engine and chassis numbers, and token tax status. This website is an independent guide and is not affiliated with the Excise Department or any government body.

Check by SMS

Punjab also offers verification by SMS: send the bike’s registration number to 8785 and read the reply carefully. If the SMS reply and the portal record disagree, trust neither blindly — recheck the number and, if needed, contact the official helplines 1035 or 0800-08786.

Before you pay for a used bike

Match the engine and chassis numbers on the bike with the record. Ask the seller for the original registration book/card and their CNIC, and confirm the token tax is paid up to date — the current rate and any dues are shown through the official portal and ePay Punjab, so check there rather than trusting a blog’s old figures. If the seller cannot produce matching documents, walk away.

Red flags

A price far below market, a seller who refuses inspection, mismatched numbers, or pressure to pay an advance before verification are all reasons to stop. A genuine seller will wait for a careful buyer.
